Jelly Belly Bars Jelly Roll Quilt

I am helping Fat Quarter Shop celebrate Jelly Roll Day by sharing the quilt that I recently sewed up with a jelly roll of Buttercup and Slate, the newest collection from Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics. 

In addition to a jelly roll, this pattern uses the Jolly Bar precuts that are exclusive to Fat Quarter Shop.  If you don't have any in your stash and don't want to wait for a fabric order to arrive, you can cut your own 5" x 10" rectangles from 1-1/4 yard of a solid.

If you were wanting to sew with a jelly roll on Saturday but don't want to start something that is going to take forever to finish, this pattern would be a great choice!  The blocks are super simple and go together so quickly.  If you chain-piece, it's even faster!  I had all of my blocks done over a couple of evenings.

For the quilting, I went with straight horizontal lines.  If you have been following me on social media for awhile, you might know that I used to have a longarm.  You might also know that it broke a year ago this month.  I still don't have it back (problems finding the parts) so I had to make do with my domestic machine.  I use the Brother PQ1500 straight-stitch sewing machine for all of my piecing and the large throat space has been a godsend now that I'm needing to use it for my quilting as well.

Since the jelly roll was provided by Moda Fabrics ahead of the Buttercup and Slate fabric release and I had a deadline for completing this quilt, I couldn't wait for prints from the collection to be available for backing and binding.  I chose Bella Solid in Soft Yellow (9900-148) for the binding.  This is one of the solids that coordinates with Buttercup and Slate (it should be included with the fabrics that show up under that link). 

 

For the backing, I used the green pin dot print from Corey Yoder's older Cozy Up line.  I thought this print coordinated nicely with Buttercup and Slate.  I also like that it's subtle so it doesn't distract from the front of the quilt.

 

And of course I added a label when I added the binding.  I got these labels about five years ago from Custom Labels 4 U.  It has my logo on one side, and while I didn't get a picture, it says "Handmade by Amanda Wilbert" on the other side.  I got the idea for these labels from Melissa Corry at Happy Quilting.  She has a blog post where she goes into a little more detail about hers.  She also gives some measurements and specifics in one of the comments on that post.  Mine are either the same or very close.

 

While I haven't tried these myself, I did think of a couple ways that you could modify this pattern to kick it up a notch and make it extra special.  I see a lot of fabric collections that include a panel.  Sometimes these panels are one large image but sometimes they are made up of multiple images that can be cut out and sewn into a project.  If you happened to have a panel that had sections that could be cut into 5"x10" rectangles, I think it would be really cute to replace some of the background rectangles with panel images.

 

Another idea I had was to make the quilt into a keepsake for yourself or a special person in your life.  I don't know a lot about the supplies you would need because I've never done it, but I believe there are fabric markers that you can use to write on fabric (I usually see this on quilt labels).  You could have family members write a message on the rectangles or have students write their names for a teacher gift.  Be creative!

 

I had a lot of fun making this quilt.  No matter how long I've been quilting, it's always nice to make a fast, easy, stress-free quilt.  So grab the pattern, choose a jelly roll, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you have a new quilt!
