Today I am featuring a recent Ruby Star Society release by Kimberly Kight called Lil. I'm currently getting ready to cut into this fabric myself to make a sample for what I think is going to be this year's jelly roll pattern release for National Jelly Roll Day. You'll have to wait until late August or early September to see that, but I have lots of patterns to share in Lil today to help you get your Ruby Star fix.
The first pattern I'm refreshing today is Easy Argyle, my only pattern that only uses yardage. It is very rare that I make a quilt with so few fabrics in it, but this is a great option if you want a really fast quilt without a bunch of different fabrics to worry about.
I made two versions of Easy Argyle in Lil and the first is my favorite. I used the navy print with the apples and flowers and the dark gold/caramel colored print with the little white flowers as the two main fabrics. I used a pink print with a small scale print for the large diamonds and the white-on-white print with the small flowers for the small diamonds.
The second version is lighter and uses the pink print with apples and flowers plus the yellow print with small white flowers for the main fabrics, and the white-on-white with small flowers for both sizes of diamonds.

Okay, back to the quilts!
I feel like I use Shining Stars a lot in these Fabric Refresh posts. I just really love how it looks, especially when using a dark background. That allows for the accent to be white, which really makes these stars sparkle! Shining Stars is a fat quarter pattern and uses 11 fat quarters so pick your favorites! I used a navy print from the Lil collection for the background. It has tiny flowers on it that are also blue so it's subtle and lets the print look almost like a solid with just a little bit of texture.
Next is Tumble, another fat quarter quilt. I used that navy flower print again for the accent and used the same little flower print in white-on-white for the background. It's probably more of a cream than white, but you probably know what I mean. It's one of those light prints where you can't see the design when purchasing online because the print blends into the background so much that it looks solid. They make great backgrounds because it's just a little more special than a plain solid without distracting from the rest of the fabrics at all.
The next several quilts can be made with precuts and you can easily find precuts of Lil (Ruby Star Society is owned by Moda Fabrics, the company that made precuts so popular). However, with one exception, I created these remaining mock-ups as though I were using fat quarters instead.
Why? There are some prints that I didn't really want to use. There are some stripes that are cute, (and I did use one for binding on a couple of the quilts here) but I didn't care for how they looked in the blocks. There are also some low volumes that could blend into the background too much. If I left those out, there were only 30 pieces left that I wanted to include in my mock-ups. That would not be enough for the patterns I'm sharing. Plus, using fewer prints by using fat quarters, I was able to choose my most favorite prints and colors.
You can certainly use precuts if you decide to make any of these with Lil, just keep in mind that yours might look a little different than my mock-ups.
First up is Flutter, which is a layer cake pattern. I don't have fat quarter instructions in this particular pattern, but you can make it with 11 fat quarters. You'll easily be able to cut the pieces you need for three blocks from each fat quarter. I made one version with a light background and navy butterfly bodies and one that is the opposite with a navy background and light bodies. Which is your favorite?
Next up is Log Jam. This one is a jelly roll pattern and it does have fat quarter instructions included. This pattern also has three layout options. I refreshed two of those layouts here and made a light and dark version of each. That's four chances to be inspired!
Ophelia is also a jelly roll pattern that includes fat quarter instructions. I only refreshed this with a light background, but I did try out two different colors for the cornerstones. I like the navy cornerstones because I feel like they really pop with that darker contrast. However the orange cornerstones also work and give the quilt a bit of a softer feel to it.
Garden Charm is a charm pack pattern that also has instructions for fat quarters. Even though the Charm in Garden Charm is for the charm packs, I actually designed this pattern around some fat quarters of the much-loved Scrumptious Mums floral prints from Bonnie and Camille, hence the Garden part of the pattern name. I used that navy print again for the background and decided I wanted a limited palette for the blocks. You only need six fat quarters so you can really be intentional about which prints and colors you use.
Last but not least, Jelly Patch is the one exception that I mentioned earlier. This is a jelly roll quilt and I did create the mock-up as though I was using a jelly roll. You can see that I used the stripes here. The individual pieces here are not that big and there is a lot of variety going on so I think it looks okay here (of course, this is all personal preference; you might not have any problem using those stripes in any of the other quilts I've shared!)
If you did prefer to use fat quarters, there are no instructions for that in the pattern, but you could easily use 12 fat quarters. You can get the equivalent of three jelly roll strips from each fat quarter.
