Today I'm sharing the second sample of my newest pattern, Sandalwood. But before I get into the details on this quilt, I thought you might be wondering why I called this pattern Sandalwood. Sometimes, pattern names just come to me and I go with it. Sometimes it's a little more intentional and that was the case here.

Before I can explain the name, I really need to explain where I got the idea for this pattern. A lot of times, I'll come up with a pattern by playing around in Electric Quilt software (EQ8). But sometimes, something that I see in everyday life will inspire me.

My boyfriend had a bottle of cologne sitting on the bathroom sink and I happened to look down at it one day and saw the design on the top of the bottle. My brain immediately started thinking about it as a quilt pattern. I played around in EQ8 and came up with a plan that worked well for both precuts and fat quarters and looks pretty close to that bottle cap.

I decided on Sandalwood for the pattern name because I know that's a scent that is used in a lot of fragrances and I liked the way it sounded. No idea if it's a scent in that particular bottle of cologne, though! Fragrances are definitely not my thing. I wouldn't recognize the scent of sandalwood if someone waved some right under my nose!

So now that you know the origin of Sandalwood, let's get into the details of this quilt!

I'm calling this the Pink Lemonade version because I made it with a curated fat quarter bundle from Fabric Bubb that the shop owner called Pink Lemonade. As you can see, the bundle was a mix of various yellows and pinks. I don't know what all the fabrics are, but there are definitely fabrics from Ruby Star, Art Gallery, Dear Stella, and Cotton and Steel, plus some solids.

I don't remember how many fabrics were in the bundle, but I do know that I left out at least two of them. I did not do an even number of yellow and pinks. There are five yellow fabrics and seven pink. There was enough variety in the shades of each color that I didn't feel like I needed to alternate between the two within the quilt top. You might notice that there are lots of instances of two yellow blocks right next to each other or multiple pink blocks next to each other.

One of of the fabrics from the bundle that I left out of the quilt top was the gingham that I used as the backing fabric. It is a Kitchen Window Woven by Robert Kaufman in the Lingerie color. I wasn't sure how that gingham would look when cut into narrow strips, but I love it as the back of the quilt. And since it was part of the bundle, I knew it would coordinate perfectly! I also went with a fabric from the bundle for the binding, although that one was also used in the quilt top. It was a Cotton and Steel basic called Stitch and Repeat in the Blush Metallic color.

If you look closely, you can see the quilting design. I sent this one out to Mandi at Sewcial Stitch to longarm for me. I chose the Marmalade edge-to-edge pantograph. I like how the swirls give some movement to the quilt to offset the straight lines of the blocks.

If you have read my previous blog post, you'll know that the Sandalwood pattern has a bonus pattern included that uses the leftover pieces of the strip sets. There are multiple ways to change up the look of the bonus quilt. In the other quilt, I turned the pieced blocks various ways, used a different fabric for the plain/accent blocks, and used another fabric for the border.

I also made the bonus quilt from the Pink Lemonade leftovers, but this time, I opted to use the same fabric for the accent and the border and had all of the pieced blocks facing the same way. This gives the quilt a more modern, clean look.

The light solid yellow that I used for the accent and border was also one of the fabrics from the fat quarter bundle that I did not use in the quilt top. It was Robert Kauftman Kona in Meringue. I picked another fabric from the quilt top for the binding; Moonscape in the Bellini color from Dear Stella. Even the backing matches a fabric from the front; the pink floral from Bonnie Christine's The Open Road collection for Art Gallery Fabrics.

I hope you enjoyed a closer look at this Pink Lemonade Sandalwood quilt! Don't forget to check out the pattern in my shop. If you make your own Sandalwood quilt, I'd love to see it. If you share it on social media, be sure to tag me and use the hashtag #sandalwoodquilt

Until next time,
