Meridian Quilt in Tango by Kate Spain for Moda Fabrics

Meet the Meridian quilt! This is my newest quilt pattern and it is a jelly roll friendly pattern just in time for the upcoming National Sew a Jelly Roll Day on Saturday, September 21st!

 
This is the fifth year in a row that I have had a new jelly roll pattern just in time for Jelly Roll Day! I'm hoping I can continue that tradition for awhile.

If you're not a fan of precut strips, or the fabric you want to use isn't available as precut strips, the pattern also includes instructions for fat quarters or quarter yards. 

There are also two size options! The cover quilt is the square throw and measures about 68" x 68" but there are also instructions for a large throw that is about 68" x 85". The larger throw uses 40 strips so it would be perfect if you want to use an entire 40-piece jelly roll and have no leftovers!

Meridian combines two of my favorite quilt elements: stars and log cabins. Neither element in this pattern is quite traditional in how it's constructed, but that's the fun part about designing quilt patterns. Take a traditional element and change it up to create something new and fabulous!

To make this sample quilt, I used a jelly roll of Tango, the newest collection by Kate Spain for Moda Fabrics. As I'm writing this post, this fabric is scheduled to arrive in shops sometime this month but I don't think it has yet. 

I was able to get a pre-release jelly roll to make this pattern sample, but I didn't have access to yardage, so I went with one of the Moda Bella solids that the fabric designer picked to coordinate with Tango for the stars. I chose Betty's Teal and I just love that teal color. I used the same solid for the binding. 

I chose a print from an older Kate Spain collection, Sunflowers in My Heart for the backing. Luckily, a lot of her fabrics coordinate across various fabric collections so I was able to find something that looked like it fit in with Tango. 

I quilted this quilt on my longarm and I used a pantograph called Asian Maple. It's hard to see in the photographs, but it feels botanical to me and I thought that was perfect with these fabrics.

I could not be happier with how this quilt and this pattern turned out. I know I've said this before, but I really think this is my favorite pattern that I've designed so far. I want to make it in ALL the fabrics!

I won't have time for that of course, but I do have a second sample quilted. I just need to photograph it. I also have a fun Halloween version in progress and I can't wait to share it as well! I haven't made the large throw version yet, but I have plans to make one in solids. Even though I'll be using fat quarters for that one, I'm considering starting that one on Jelly Roll Day! We'll see.
