Friday Fabric Refresh - Spice Cake from Moda Bake Shop book

Happy Fri....Wednesday??  I know, I know, I call these posts "Friday Fabric Refresh" but I just couldn't wait until Friday this time! I have a fun surprise at the end of this post so make sure to read all the way to the end!

Are you a fan of the Moda Bake Shop?  If so, you will love the newest Moda Bake Shop book, Did Someone Say Cake which was released earlier this year.  If you have not checked it out yet, you need to!  It features 12 quilts made with layer cakes which are precut 10" squares.

I have a quilt in the book called Spice Cake, which you can see below.   

I made that quilt over a year ago using Cider by BasicGrey.  That fabric may be difficult to come by now.  This pattern is very versatile and looks great in many different fabrics, but I know it can be hard to visualize what a particular fabric collection will look like in a pattern.  

I used my Electric Quilt 8 software to mockup Spice Cake in a few more recent fabric collections.   Now I want to make them all!

The first refreshed quilt features the newest Fig Tree collection called Stitched.  Joanna of Fig Tree never disappoints and I love the cheery look of this collection!

Several months ago, I had created mockups using fabric that had recently been released at that time.  This book was supposed to be released in late 2021 so I had originally thought I would be writing this blog post a lot sooner.  

The publication date was delayed and then the day job kept me from getting this blog post written until now, but I decided to go ahead and share those refreshed versions anyway.  These fabric collections are not super old, so you can probably still find them (they are all available at Fat Quarter Shop as layer cakes as of when this post is written).  You might already have them in your stash!

Cozy Up by Corey Yoder was one of my favorite collections from last fall.  If you want a fall quilt but can't find Cider like I used, Cozy Up would be a great alternative!

Fall not your thing?  How about the soft, romantic colors of Love Note by Lella Boutique?  If you loved her Nest collection, Love Note is similar in colors and feel!

Are you a Bonnie and Camille fan?  Make a bright and happy quilt with their One Fine Day collection.  This collection is full of their signature prints and colors!

I've become a bigger and bigger fan of Moda's Ruby Star Society fabrics over the last couple of years.  I refreshed Spice Cake in a few of my favorite more recent releases.  

Stay Gold by Melody Miller isn't super recent, but there are still layer cakes to be found.  This collection is a lot brighter than I am typically drawn to, but it keeps growing on me!

Unruly Nature by Jen Hewett is a bit more muted and is a collection I can't wait to sew with!  I plan to make a future quilt sample with the fabric that I bought, but it would also make a great Spice Cake quilt!

Camellia is a recent Ruby Star release by Melody Miller and is bright and happy with cute tea cups and spoons, pretty butterflies, and large florals.  I'm sewing with this fabric right now (can't share yet!) and I love it!  I would love to see it in a Spice Cake quilt.

Ruby Star also has several basics collections.  One of them is Hole Punch Dot by Kimberly Kight.  The rainbow of colors means that even as a basic, these fabrics still result in a colorful quilt!

I've mostly stuck to Moda fabric collections since this is a Moda Bake Shop book and is affiliated with Moda Fabrics, but I couldn't resist refreshing Spice Cake in Shine On by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics (be sure to check out one of my previous blog posts here if you missed my Friday Fabric Refresh post featuring Shine On).

Art Gallery does have precut 10" squares, but Shine On has several low volume prints and if I were to make Spice Cake with Shine On, I would probably use fat quarters instead.  The pattern does not include fat quarter instructions (it is a book about layer cakes, after all) but you could use 12 fat quarters in place of the 36 layer cake squares.  Don't cut 10" squares from your fat quarters though or you won't have enough!  Instead, skip to the instructions for how to cut each layer cake square.  You will be able to cut enough pieces from each fat quarter to equal three layer cake squares or three blocks.

Another recent fabric line that I'm loving these days is Martha by Andrea Patton for Figo Fabrics.  There are 12 prints in this line so one fat quarter bundle would be the perfect amount to make this quilt with fat quarters!

Finally, I couldn't resist seeing what this quilt would look like in Daybreak, the debut collection by Fran Gulick of Cotton & Joy for Riley Blake Designs.  This fabric is so pretty and is a perfect springtime palette.  Riley Blake does have precut 10" squares that they call 10" Stackers.
