The Fourth of July is just days away here in the United States which means it is the perfect time to sew with some red, white, and blue fabrics! Luckily, the amazing Berry Basket collection by April Rosenthal for Moda Fabrics recently started showing up in shops and this fabric is the perfect collection to feature for a Fabric Refresh blog post as we wrap up June and head into the thick of summer.
As soon as I saw this fabric in the Moda catalog, I knew I wanted to refresh my Log Jam pattern with it. Berry Basket has dark red and navy prints, plus lighter pink, aqua, gray, and white prints. It looked like there was about an even split between light and dark. Log Jam normally can be made with a print jelly roll and a solid jelly roll, but I wanted to see what it would look like if I used two Berry Basket jelly rolls and used the lighter prints in place of a solid jelly roll. It turned out as great as I was hoping it would!
The quilt above is one of the alternate layouts in the Log Jam pattern. I couldn't stop there though. I had to create the other two layouts as well. I'd really like to make one of these, but I have way too much on my plate already. Plus I don't know how I'd decide which layout to go with!
One thing I wanted to note is that because I don't have this fabric, I'm not completely sure which prints are duplicated in the jelly roll. When making these mockups, I was short one dark print. I used one of the navy prints again. If I was making this in real life, I would pick a dark print for the binding and cut an extra strip from that, if I needed to. There should be enough extra fabric to do that without increasing how much fabric you buy. You can also use one of the lighter prints and make sure you pair it with an even lighter fabric. The quilt is so scrappy that I don't think it would be noticeable.
The next quilt that I refreshed in Berry Basket is Ophelia, because I think every fabric collection looks good in this pattern and I can't help myself! Ophelia is another jelly roll pattern and is probably less complicated than it looks. You could use a solid background, but I decided to use one of the white prints from the Berry Basket collection. It's hard to see in this mockup but it's a white fabric with little gray flowers on it.
Next up is Spellbound. This pattern was written for a jelly roll and honey bun but I'm not sure that Berry Basket has a honey bun. No worries though if you want to make this. The pattern also has directions for using fat eighths instead! I used the white print with the small gray flowers again for the background.
Wishing Well is up next, which is a layer cake pattern. I couldn't decide if I liked a dark chain or a lighter chain better so I made a mockup of each. The darker chain is a navy print from the Berry Basket collection that looks like a solid from a distance. The lighter one is a gray solid. It's not any particular color or brand of solid so if you want to make that version, just pick a gray solid that you like from your favorite solids brand.
I also mocked up a couple of versions of Shining Stars. I personally like the navy best, probably because blue is my favorite color but I know red is also a popular color in quilting so I had to try out a red background too!
The last pattern that I've refreshed for today is Garden Charm. This pattern needs just two charm packs, plus yardage for the accent (the white) and background. I used the white print with little gray flowers for the accent. I couldn't decide on a background color so I used every color in the collection except white. All of the backgrounds are prints from the Berry Basket collection.
