So Christmas is only about five months away. I know, I know. Don't blame the messenger! If you haven't started your Christmas sewing yet, now is the time! It's also convenient that this is the time of year that the Christmas fabric collections are showing up in quilt shops. One of my favorite holiday collections this year is Wintertale by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics so of course I had to refresh some of my patterns with it!

I actually saw this collection for the first time months ago and as soon as I saw it, I fell in love with it. I think it had a lot to do with the white print with the little stars sprinkled on it. I knew it would make the perfect background fabric! I don't think I'm the only one to think so. It's the only print out of stock right now on Fat Quarter Shop as well as on Art Gallery Fabric's website for wholesale orders. At the time I'm writing this, there are a few listings for that print on Etsy (other prints come up at the link too, so you may have to scroll for them).

All of the mockups that I'm sharing today use that star print for the background, but if you're not able to find it, a solid white or another small scale print like a dot would still look great!

The first quilt I'm sharing today is Ophelia. While this pattern is jelly roll friendly, you'll want to use the fat quarter option in the pattern if you want to make a Wintertale version since Art Gallery Fabrics does not offer precut strips (as far as I know). Grab a fat quarter bundle, pick 12 of your favorite prints that contrast well with your background and you're good to go! Don't forget to grab an extra quarter yard for the cornerstones. I used the light blue print for mine. You could also use a leftover fat quarter from your bundle.

Next up is Window Box, another pattern that is typically made with a jelly roll. While this older pattern does not have fat quarter requirements included, you can cut enough strips to make the quilt from 10 fat quarters or 10 quarter yards, not counting the cornerstones.

Another favorite jelly roll pattern is Log Jam but this newer pattern also has fat quarter requirements and instructions included. With three layout options, you're sure to find one you like!

Next up is Stay Square, which is a great option if you want to really showcase your favorite fabrics. It can be made with a layer cake or fat quarters. Art Gallery does have precut 10" squares. I made this mockup as though I was using fat quarters and featured 12 of my favorite prints from the Wintertale collection.

Shining Stars is another great pattern if you want to really give your favorite prints a chance to shine (no pun intended!). This pattern uses just 11 fat quarters and would look great with a variety of background colors. I'm sharing two options here.

If you want to narrow down the number of different fabrics even more, you might enjoy making a Garden Charm quilt. Charm packs can be used for a scrappier version, but the pattern also has instructions for using 6 fat quarters. For the mockup below, I chose a variety of prints and colors and used the light blue print for the background, with that white star print for the accent.

The last pattern that I'm sharing today is Good Fortunes. This pattern uses 16 fat quarters. The Wintertale collection only has 17 prints in it, including the white print that I used for the background. I also didn't really want to use the red and white stripe or a couple of the larger scale prints that might not look quite right in a block with multiple pieces that are not that big. So I created this mockup as though I had used 8 half yards and treated each as two fat quarters.

For the sashing, I made one mockup with the red and white stripe and another with the light blue print. Which one is your favorite?

That's all for today! If you like Wintertale as much as I do, make sure you grab some before it's gone, especially if you want to use the white print! (Check Etsy for that one!) I will be making one of the quilts in this post for real and I can't wait to get it sewn up so I can share!

Until next time,

Amanda
