Are you ready for Christmas? It may only be the beginning of June, but I'm sure the rest of the year is going to fly by. I swear it was just January yesterday!
This time of year is when the Christmas fabric collections start showing up in shops. One recent release is Christmas Eve by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. It has a classic Christmas feel with deep reds and evergreen greens plus a variety of grays and snowy whites. If you loved her Christmas Morning collection from two years ago, you'll love this one too! It's very similar.
Today I'm sharing several of my patterns refreshed with Christmas Eve fabric. I probably could have refreshed all of my patterns but I finally made myself stop after nine (though some of those nine have multiple versions!)
Ophelia was the first quilt I was itching to refresh in Christmas Eve. Since Ophelia is my most recent pattern (well, recent as in I haven't released one since; it's been available since last September), I haven't had a chance to refresh it in traditional Christmas colors until now. And I love it as much as I knew I would!
I couldn't decide between red and green cornerstones so I'm sharing both. The red version has a solid white background and the green version has the multi-colored dot fabric from the Christmas Eve collection.
I also decided to try a dark background and even though the gray prints kind of blend in a bit, I still really like it!
This mock-up is very similar to how I think the black crossweave from Moda would likely look (the black on gray version that is linked; they have another black crossweave that is darker). I have used black crossweave (like in my Midnight Clear quilt) and it is not as dark in real life as it looks on the computer screen when looking at it in shops. I think it looks more like the dark gray shown here or maybe a little darker. Even the photo of my Midnight Clear quilt looks a lot darker in the photo than it does when looking at the quilt in person, in my opinion. Of course, everyone's computer and mobile device screens are different, so the way it looks to me might be different than how it looks to you.
Basically, any time I reference black crossweave in this post, I'm referring to a very dark gray fabric with some texture. I would use the crossweave if I were actually making any of these, but feel free to use whatever you think will give you the look you're going for!
If you've followed me for a while, you might remember that I made a sample of my Stay Square pattern in the older Christmas Morning fabric. If you liked that quilt but missed out on that fabric collection, this is your chance to make the quilt with fabric that is very similar!
I made one version with a solid black accent like the original sample that I made and also made a version with a red accent using the red dot print from the Christmas Eve collection (the dot is very subtle so it might not even show up here).
The next quilt that I refreshed is Wishing Well which is a layer cake pattern (like Stay Square above). There are two sizes in the pattern and this is the smaller size. That makes it easier to leave out prints that might not contrast with the background as well, or even just prints you don't like as much (I left out the stripes in this mock-up).
First, I made a mock-up with a light background using the white print with multi-colored dots from Christmas Eve with the darker of the two gray dot prints for the chain.
Then I made the opposite with the white dot as the chain and black crossweave as the background. The gray dot isn't really dark enough to contrast with the other gray fabrics in the collection which is why I didn't use it for the background.
Next up is Honey Squares which is a honey bun friendly quilt pattern. I'm pretty sure Moda Fabrics is the only company that has honey buns (1.5" precut strips, similar to a jelly roll), but even Moda doesn't have them available for all collections. Christmas Eve does have honey buns so this is a great opportunity to try out this pattern! The pattern also has instructions for fat quarters, so if you don't want to use honey buns, you have options! In this mock-up, I used the black crossweave as the accent in the centers of the blocks but I think the dark gray dot print would work too, especially if you'd rather use something more subtle than the crossweave.
The next few mock-ups are all fat quarter quilts so you can pick your favorite prints from a fat quarter bundle of the Christmas Eve collection. Shining Stars is up first. I designed this quilt to use a dark background fabric so that the white accent kind of makes the stars sparkle. So the black crossweave was perfect for a Christmas Eve version!
Spun Sugar was my very first pattern and I still love the pinwheels where the blocks meet. I went with a black solid for the pinwheels because I really wanted them to show up and the black crossweave didn't really pop when I tried it.
Spun Sugar also uses a different fabric for the setting triangles along the edges of the quilt instead of just extending the background fabric and I came up with two versions that I liked. One uses a white print with small florals and the other uses a plaid print, both from the Christmas Eve collection.
I also made two versions of the Evening Glow pattern; one with a white background and black crossweave accent and one with a crossweave background and white accent. I think I like the dark background the best. Which is your favorite?
Next up is Good Fortunes. I don't seem to refresh this one very often; I'm not sure why because I really like this quilt. I definitely like it in Christmas Eve! Of course I used the dot fabric for the background. The easiest way to change up the look of this quilt is to change the sashing fabric between the blocks. Here I've used the green and red plaid and the green and white stripe.
The last refreshed quilt for today is Easy Argyle which uses yardage. Pick two main fabrics and then either one or two light fabrics for the diamonds. For the first mock-up shown, I used the red and green plaid and the green dot as the main fabrics and the multi-color dot print for both the large and small diamonds.
The second version uses the small red floral and the green plaid for the main fabrics, the white small floral for the large diamonds and the multi-color dot for the small diamonds. I think this one is my favorite of the two! If I didn't have so many other quilts in my queue, I'd probably make this one! I've wanted to make a Christmas version for years and just haven't gotten to it.
