Wayward Quilt in Red and Blue Art Gallery Fabrics

I'm sharing one final Wayward quilt today. This one is made with red, white, and blue fabrics. I actually sewed this around the July 4th holiday. I may not have had a completed quilt in time for the holiday but it was fun to be sewing with on-theme fabrics!

 

Wayward can be made with a jelly roll, quarter yards, fat quarters, fat eighths, or your stash. I used a curated fat quarter bundle from Binded With Love to make this quilt. It features a variety of Art Gallery Fabrics collections and designers. The background is Art Gallery Pure Solid in White Linen which is an off-white.

At the time of this post, the exact fat quarter bundle that I used is still available. I bought it awhile ago and didn't have any particular plans for it. I just liked the colors and the prints (Sara, the shop owner, has a lot of really great curated bundles, so be sure to check out her shop, even if this specific bundle is no longer available!

I was toying with the idea of a two-color version of this quilt and I realized that the bundle would be perfect for this quilt. It had exactly six blue prints and six red/pink prints. The pattern technically only needs 11 fat quarters, but in order to have the reds and blues alternate within each block, I needed an even number. 

If you want to make your own two-color version of Wayward, I did include some helpful hints in the pattern, such as the slight change to the fabric requirements.

 

 

In keeping with the red and blue theme, I used a red backing/blue binding combo for this quilt. The backing is a red floral that was also part of the fat quarter bundle. It is the Rising Blooms print from the All is Well collection by AGF Studio for Art Gallery Fabrics. The binding was also one of the prints in the bundle and is the Blue Minerale color from the Decostitch basics line from Art Gallery Fabrics.

For many years, I sewed primarily with fabrics from Moda and Riley Blake, plus a few others. Within the past couple of years, I've started sewing with Art Gallery Fabrics more and more often. I think part of that is because my taste in fabric has shifted over the years. 

One thing that makes Art Gallery different from other fabrics that I've used is the higher thread count. At first, the fabrics felt odd because it's not what I was used to. The fabrics are thinner, but that can be a good thing when you live in the south and it's hot a lot! This quilt definitely feels lighter and cooler than other quilts I've made.

 

 

I quilted this quilt myself on my domestic machine, a Janome MC6650 using a wavy stitch. I really like the look of this type of quilting and the subtle texture that it gives the quilt. I bought that machine specifically so I could quilt wavy lines because I like the look of it so much! (I do all my piecing on my Brother 1500S, which I've had for almost 12 years and love!)
