I'm back to share another Wayward quilt with you to celebrate the release of my newest quilt pattern! This year is the fourth year that I've released a jelly roll pattern just in time for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day! It feels like tradition now so hopefully I'll be able to keep it up in future years!
Why did I call this quilt Wayward? I actually had a really hard time coming up with a name for this one. Sometimes a pattern name will come easily to me (sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it seems random). But sometimes I really struggle.
I finally settled on Wayward after thinking about how the blocks appear to be going in two different directions and they kind of all appear to be about to intersect each other, like they can't agree on which way to go.
It also feels like a metaphor for how my life seems to be going these days. As you may know, I quit my day job earlier this year to escape burnout and a toxic environment that was damaging my health. I'm doing some contract work now but unless my quilting business really starts taking off, I'll need to find a full time job at some point. I have no idea what I want to do and don't really want to go back to what I was doing.
One of the definitions of "wayward" is behaving in an unusual or unpredictable way. I think it's safe to say that possibly throwing away a career after spending years doing the "right" and "expected" thing to move up the ranks makes me a little wayward!
This is the first pattern I've managed to release since I quit my job in January (I did not plan to take that long!) so I thought it was fitting for the name to represent my life at the moment.
I used a jelly roll of Sunnyside by Camille Roskelley for Moda Fabrics to make this quilt. I had yardage of the dot print from Bonnie and Camille's Sunday Stroll collection from a few years ago and thought I wanted to use it for the background, but I was second guessing myself. I held a poll in my Instagram stories between the dot and a plain white and the dot was the clear winner! I'm really happy that I used the dot because I think it looks amazing with these Sunnyside fabrics!
When I first saw Sunnyside announced on social media, I was immediately drawn to the burgundy prints in the collection. So it's probably no surprise that I chose the burgundy floral print for the backing. I used one of the navy prints for the binding and I think the two look great together!
This quilt was longarm quilted by Rhonda from Olie and Evie using the Cassava pantrograph, a pretty feather design. If you're looking for a longarm quilter, you should definitely check out the Olie and Evie website. She has monthly specials too!
I had trouble getting the quilting to show up well in photographs from the front of the quilt, so it's easier to look at the back.
