Fabric Refresh - Jelly Roll Day 2023

It's that time again! The annual National Sew a Jelly Roll Day is tomorrow, Saturday September 16th! You can read more about Jelly Roll Day HERE, but basically it's a day created by Moda Fabrics to celebrate all of those wonderful jelly roll patterns and spend the day sewing with your favorite 2.5" strips.

If you're ready to sew but still need a pattern to use, I've got you covered! This is the fourth year in a row that I've released a jelly roll pattern right before Jelly Roll Day and I'm hoping it's a tradition I can keep up.

I'm sharing a special jelly roll themed Fabric Refresh post today. I've picked three recent Moda Fabrics collections (one is Ruby Star Society, which is owned by Moda) and have refreshed each of my previous Jelly Roll Day releases (plus a few others) in each of those three fabric lines! There's even a free pattern included, so make sure you scroll all the way to the end of this post!

If you're looking for refreshed versions of my latest pattern, Wayward, you can find those in a separate post HERE.

The first pattern that I'm featuring today is Ophelia, which was my 2022 jelly roll pattern. I still sometimes can't believe how just the right combination of block, sashing, and cornerstone arrangement can take a very simple, not-very-exciting quilt block and turn it into an amazing design! (If I do say so myself, ha!)

The first Ophelia quilt that I'm sharing is in Sherri and Chelsi's latest collection, Bountiful Blooms. This quilt always looks a bit like flowers to me so this collection full of flower prints is perfect! I even went with a yellow print for the cornerstones to imitate flower centers.

Or you can ditch the white background all together and try out one of the solids that coordinate with Bountiful Blooms, like Bella solid in Golden Wheat (9900-103) that I've used below. (You can see all the coordinating colors HERE. They are listed along the edges of the last two pages.)

Next up is Ophelia refreshed in Camille Roskelley's Lighthearted collection. Even with the greens, this collection gives me a Valentine's Day feel, especially with the white print with the little red hearts that I used for the background. February might feel a long way off, but it will be here before you know it, so this might be a great time to get a jump start on a Valentine's quilt!

The third collection that I'm featuring today is Ruby Star Society's Tiny Frights, this year's collaborative Halloween line. If you've followed me a while, you might remember me mentioning that while I don't care for most Halloween-related activities, I LOVE Halloween fabric! Tiny Frights is no exception. I mocked up Ophelia in both a light background and a dark background. The light version uses the white-on-cream lightning bolt print and the dark version uses the black eyes print, both from Tiny Frights.

Two years ago, I released my Log Jam pattern. This is a super fun twist on a traditional log cabin block (technically, the blocks are quarter log cabins) that goes together very quickly! There are three layout options included in the pattern so you have lots of options!

I mocked-up all three layouts in Lighthearted. I used a solid white in these, but you could easily use the little heart print that I used in Ophelia above.

For Bountiful Blooms, I only did two of the three layouts, but I did create a second mock-up using the Betty's Teal coordinating solid (9900-126) as the background for one of them. If you are thinking of using Betty's Teal with Bountiful Blooms, you may want to check out my Wayward Fabric Refresh post HERE for a heads up on why your quilt might not look quite like the digital version.

Can't forget about Tiny Frights! I mocked-up all three layouts, but only using the light background. I'm sure these would look great with a black background too! Just swap some of the darkest black prints for the lighter prints.

The first pattern that I released for Jelly Roll Day was Jelly Patch in 2020. The really fun thing about this pattern is that if you have solid jelly rolls, you can make this quilt with nothing but jelly rolls! (Plus backing and binding, of course.) That means you can jump right in without a bunch of cutting!

Even though the releases might not have coincided with Jelly Roll Day, I do have other jelly roll patterns so I'm sharing some of those here too! In fact, for a long time, one of my most popular patterns was one of my earliest patterns, Window Box. This is a good pattern for a beginner. The piecing is basic and uses strip piecing to help it go together faster. And it seems to look great in just about any fabric collection!

Another fun jelly roll pattern is Double Take, my take on a double Irish chain quilt. I love the look of a subtle print for the secondary chain, but you could certainly use a darker color or print if you prefer. For Bountiful Blooms, I used the print from the collection that looks like tiny flowers in rows on a white background (look for SKU 37664-11)

For my Lighthearted version of Double Take, I used the aqua lattice print on a white background (not the aqua on aqua version; look for SKU 55295-21). It's possible that might actually be too light compared to the white background. I don't have any of this collection so I don't know what it looks like in real life, but digital images are often darker than the real thing, so keep that in mind if you want to make this version. You could use the darker aqua-on-aqua version of that print, but that might blend in with the other aqua prints too much and I don't think there are enough strips in a jelly roll to leave them out.

For the Tiny Frights version, I used the bats print on a cream background (SKU RS5115-13).

My Garden Charm pattern is normally a charm pack or fat quarter pattern, but there are bonus instructions in the pattern for a second version of the quilt that uses a jelly roll! I mocked up two versions of both Bountiful Blooms and Lighthearted below. I skipped Tiny Frights for this one because I couldn't come up with background and accent combinations that I liked.

For Bountiful Blooms, I made one version that used one of the blue prints in the collection for the background (it looks like a solid and has a knit design on it; look for SKU 37667-18) and a white floral for the accent in the center of the blocks (look for SKU 37662-11). The second version uses the same two fabrics, but they are flip-flopped.

For Lighthearted, I used the small heart print for the accent for both (look for SKU 55298-11). I went with fabrics that are not part of the collection this time. One version uses Bella Solid in Aqua (9900-34) and the other uses Moda's crossweave in Graphite (12119-52). By the way, you can always search by SKU number on Fat Quarter Shop and if they have it in stock, it should come right up in the search.

Last but not least, I decided to mock-up my free Curtain Call pattern. Curtain Call is a jelly roll quilt that is a free tutorial here on my blog! It's a few years old, so if you haven't seen it before, you should definitely check it out HERE!

The Bountiful Blooms version uses the coordinating Bella Solid in Rose Water (9900-425) for the background in the first version below.

That's all for today! I hope you've found some inspiration and I hope you'll be able to spend some time sewing tomorrow for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day! I'm planning to open up a jelly roll of Tiny Frights and start another Wayward quilt and I can't wait!

Until next time,

Amanda
