Happy Friday and welcome to the 5th and final day of Fabric Refresh Week! I've had a lot of fun sharing all of my refreshed quilts with you this week. To finish out the week, I'm sharing another Ruby Star Society collection, Sunbeam by Rashida Coleman-Hale.
This collection wasn't even on my radar until a couple weeks ago when I happened to see a post on social media as it was beginning to arrive in shops. It immediately made me think of First Light, another Ruby Star Society collection from a couple of years ago.
I missed out on that one but was playing around with it in EQ8 a few months ago for some reason. I used it to create a digital version of a future pattern and I thought about trying to track down enough fabric to make it. With the release of Sunbeam, I'm going to use that instead! I can't share that future quilt yet, but it would also look great in several of my current patterns. Let's jump right in (and be sure to look for today's coupon code somewhere in this post!)
My favorite quilt that I refreshed in Sunbeam is Scrappy Herringbone. I love this one so much that I got all the way to having all of the fabric needed in my cart before I stopped myself! I just don't have the time to add another quilt to my to-do list. Not to mention that I don't need to be spending money on remaking existing patterns right now considering I quit my job recently.
Scrappy Herringbone is a layer cake pattern and this version is the larger size option (both the larger herringbone and larger overall quilt). It uses 80 squares so since layer cakes are 42 squares, you'll be able to leave out two pieces from each of two layer cakes. That means that even if the darkest black print in the collection is duplicated, you should be able to leave it out and still have enough to make this quilt. I did not use that print in this mock-up because I thought it looked out of place compared to the other fabrics.
Next up is Double Take, a jelly roll quilt that is my take on a double Irish chain quilt. You can see that I did use that black print in this quilt. I used one of the lighter prints in the Sunbeam collection for the accent so some of the other lighter prints do blend in a little bit. I was okay with that. If you make this, just use all the darkest prints and then add in some lighter ones until you have the number of jelly roll strips needed. Just be sure to use a bright white for the background, such as Moda's Bella solid 9900-98 to ensure that it contrasts with that light accent. Light fabrics have a tendency to look even lighter in real life than they do on a computer screen.
Jelly Patch is another fun jelly roll pattern. This is another pattern where I would definitely use white as the background so that all of those lighter prints have a chance to show up. You can even use two solid jelly rolls instead of yardage for the background. You can get started sewing with very minimal cutting!
While I'm on a jelly roll kick, let's go ahead and see what Ophelia looks like in Sunbeam. The first refreshed version shown here assumes a jelly roll is used. You can see how that one black print really stands out compared to everything else. You might be able to leave that one out depending on how many really light prints you might also not want to use.
If you really want to make sure you can exclude the black or even some of the other prints, you can use the fat quarter instructions included in the pattern and pick 12 of your favorite prints instead. I really liked using just a few pink and gold prints in various shades. It reminds me of a fat quarter bundle I bought from an online shop a few years ago called Pink Lemonade.
Using fat quarters could also be a good option for Ophelia if you like the look of the black mixed in with the other colors but would prefer it shows up a little more throughout the quilt. If you use that black print as one of your 12 fat quarters, you will have six blocks with that fabric. There is another black print as well that isn't as dark that would also help add to the variety of this version.

Shining Stars is up next. I made two versions of this fat quarter quilt, both of which are different than what I normally do with this pattern. Instead of a dark background, I made one with one of the lighter tone-on-tone cream prints. I would definitely use a bright white for the accent to make sure it has a chance to contrasting with that light background.
The second version uses a light gray background with the Dove color from Ruby Star's Spark basics collection.
I saved my second-favorite Sunbeam mock-up (after Scrappy Herringbone) for last. It's Stay Square and I used the fat quarter option in the pattern when picking fabrics for this refreshed version. You can use a layer cake but I wanted a more uniform look with a few of my favorite colors and prints. I used a grayish-brown solid for the accent but I think black or dark gray would look great as well!
