Fabric Refresh - Sandalwood Bonus Quilt

I'm back with another Fabric Refresh post featuring my newest pattern, Sandalwood. Earlier, I shared a Fabric Refresh post for the main Sandalwood quilt. Today, I'm sharing refreshed versions of the bonus quilt pattern that is included with the Sandalwood pattern.

There are multiple layout options in the pattern, but you can also come up with your own! You can also change up the look of the quilt by changing how you handle the plain blocks in between the pieced blocks and the border. I've tried to mix up the mockups to showcase some of the ways you can make this quilt work for you.

All the quilts today are the bonus versions of some (not all) of the mockups in the previous post

The first quilt shown above uses the Palette Picks bundle by Modernly Morgan for Robert Kaufman. The bundle has 21 fabrics in it and 20 of them are bright and colorful and the 21st fabric looks more like a light gray from a distance but has multi-colored threads woven through it. It's a Metallic Essex Yarn Dyed woven in the Sorbet color and I thought that using it for the accent between the pieced blocks would be a good way to let the pieced blocks shine while sticking with fabrics from the bundle since Morgan from Modernly Morgan already took the time to coordinate everything. For the border, I used Manchester in Violet and the binding is a Kona solid called Breakers. Both are also from the bundle so they definitely coordinate!

Next up is a Christmas quilt using Christmas in the City, a 2022 collection from AGF Studio for Art Gallery Fabrics. This collection is getting hard to find, but you might find a fat quarter bundle on Etsy. As of this post's writing, Fat Quarter Shop has just under three yards of the Santa print left, so two people could get the 1-1/4 yards needed for the border! I thought the border was a great way to use that cute Santa print since the thin strips in the blocks mean that most of the Santa's are going to end up with part of their head cut off!

I went with a darker look for the bonus Sandalwood quilt made from Sharon Holland's Juniper collection for Art Gallery Fabrics that arrived in shops recently. I used the green print that has lighter green trees on it for both the plain accent squares and the border. I kept it simple again with all the blocks turned the same way with the strips going side-to-side.

Willow is another of Sharon Holland's collections, although a little older. I put the strips in the pieced blocks vertically this time and mocked up the quilt both with and without a different fabric for the border. The border brings in a nice touch of extra color but using the same fabric for the accent and border does give it a nice simple, clean modern feel.

I also refreshed Sandalwood in a couple of Ruby Star Society collections. The first is Sunbeam by Rashida Coleman-Hale. This time I used the layout that's on the back cover of the Sandalwood pattern where every other pieced block is rotated 90 degrees when you move across a row or down a column, but they face the same way if going diagonally from one corner of the quilt to the other. I also noticed that I started with a plain block in the upper left corner on this mockup, while it's a pieced block in the pattern and my sample quilt. It doesn't matter! That's the beauty of this bonus pattern!

Elixir by Melody Miller is the other Ruby Star Society collection that I used to mockup this bonus quilt. I definitely liked the light pink print for the accent, but at the time that I originally made these, I couldn't decide on a border or layout that I liked best, so I'm sharing all three that I made. This collection is a little older and the first two border prints are out of stock at Fat Quarter Shop, so if I was making this today, I'd probably just stick with the pink print, or maybe swap the border prints below for one of the large florals that are currently still available on Etsy.

As I mentioned in my previous post, my cover quilt for Sandalwood was going to be in Little Snippets by Bonnie and Camille. If that had happened, this was going to be the bonus quilt. I do have the fabric so maybe it will happen one day, but for now the digital version will have to do!

After some time had passed, I switched my plans for the cover quilt to Harvest Road by Lella Boutique so I already had my bonus quilt planned out for that collection too. I also have the fabric for this quilt so this is another one that you might get to see for real one day!

The last collection that I'm sharing today is Stitched by Fig Tree for Moda Fabrics. I was thinking about buying this fabric last summer when I thought I might get Sandalwood released so I had tried out several options for the bonus quilt while trying to decide what yardage I wanted to use. I never did buy any fabric, which is just as well since I still didn't get the pattern out and probably wouldn't have made a Sandalwood quilt with it anyway, but that doesn't mean I can't share all four bonus versions with you!

That's all for today! I hope I've given you some ideas and some inspiration for your own Sandalwood bonus quilts.

Of course, you don't have to use any of the layouts in the pattern or even alternate between the pieced and plain blocks or make a quilt this size (60"x70"). You could just make the pieced blocks and then come up with a completely new way to arrange them in a quilt. You can really do whatever you want with the leftovers. Be creative!

Until next time,

Amanda
