Fabric Refresh - Sandalwood Quilt

Hello! I just released a new pattern so of course I have to dedicate a Fabric Refresh post to it! There are so many fabric options that look great with this pattern. In fact, I have so many mockups of this pattern to share that I'm going to get right to it!

The first refreshed Sandalwood quilt I'm sharing is shown above and features the Palette Picks bundle by Modernly Morgan for Robert Kaufman. I absolutely love this color palette. It is so cheery and happy and bright. It would make a great spring quilt! This bundle is available as fat quarters, so I chose 12 of my favorite colors from the bundle for this mockup (12 is the number of fat quarters needed to make the quilt).

However, spring is months away so you might be more interested in a Christmas quilt right now. Wintertale by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics also looks great as a Sandalwood quilt. I used the white print from the collection for the background, but it might be hard to find now. A solid white would look just as great!

Wintertale was released earlier this year, but Art Gallery had another Christmas collection last year called Christmas in the City. It was an adorable collection and if you happen to have some in your stash, it would make a darling Sandalwood quilt.

Maybe instead of a Christmas quilt, you're looking for something with a cozy, almost rustic feel to it. Sharon Holland's latest collection with Art Gallery Fabrics called Juniper might fit the bill. Full of various shades of golds and greens, it might be the perfect collection if you're making a quilt for someone who doesn't fit the girly feel of many fabric collections.

If you prefer to sew well in advance of holidays, you may be ready to start sewing or at least planning a Halloween quilt for next year. I mocked up both a light and dark version of Sandalwood in Spooky 'n Witchy by Art Gallery Fabrics. 

That was this year's Art Gallery Halloween collection and it's getting hard to find. However, it was the fourth or fifth year in a row that AGF had a Halloween collection and they all have coordinated with prior years. If you like the look of these quilts below but can't find the exact fabrics, any of the older prints would work or you can wait to see if AGF releases another collection in 2024. I know I'm hoping that they will!

If you liked the pink and yellow palette of my second sample quilt (blogged HERE), you might like these versions in Sunbeam by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Ruby Star Society. It's not exactly the same, but if you use fat quarters, you can pick 12 of the pinks, yellows, and golds and achieve a similar look.

I mocked up a light and dark version, plus an additional light version that uses a print that is more reddish than pink in place of a print that might be a little more white than pink in real life than it appears in digital form.

As I mentioned in the post about the main sample quilt, this pattern has been a really long time coming. That sample quilt was pieced almost three years ago, but I had designed it five years ago. There have been several times over the years that I thought I would get it released and made some mockups in recent fabrics. None of those are recent now but I still have the digital images saved and figured I'd still share them in case you have these fabrics in your stash, just waiting for inspiration to strike!

The first mockup I made when designing this pattern was in Little Snippets by Bonnie and Camille for Moda Fabrics. It was late 2018 and Little Snippets was scheduled to arrive in January 2019. I was going to use Little Snippets to make my sample quilt. Honey buns were available for that collection so I made the mockup as if I were using two honey buns.

When I didn't get the pattern written as I had planned (I also hadn't gotten a sample quilt sewn even though I had my two honey buns), I decided to make the sample quilt in Lella Boutique's Harvest Road, which released in late 2019 and would be more recent. I bought my fabric for this one too, but sadly, it has also never been made.

I finally started sewing my Balboa sample quilt right after New Years in 2021, so I'm sure that's why I created this mockup in BasicGrey's Cider collection, which had just been released a couple months earlier. I didn't plan to make the Cider version, but I'm sure I was thinking ahead to a Fabric Refresh post! 

If you don't have any Cider in your stash, but you do have BasicGrey's Nutmeg, that collection is very similar to Cider and would create a very similar look.

I didn't get the pattern out that year. Eventually I had to focus on my Log Jam pattern so that I could get it out for that year's National Jelly Roll Day in September.

The following year, 2022, I again planned on getting the pattern out. I made a mockup in Fig Tree's Stitched collection which had arrived in the spring of 2022, I believe. I almost bought honey buns to make this version so that I could have a sample in current fabric. It's just as well that I didn't because the pattern release still didn't happen. I put it aside again to get my Ophelia pattern out for 2022's National Jelly Roll Day.

If you don't have any Stitched in your stash but you have a stash of Fig Tree fabrics, you can probably make your own Fig Tree bundle that would look similar to this.

Another collection that arrived in early 2022 was Elixir by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society. I really like this collection and I thought it made a really pretty Sandalwood quilt. Even though Ruby Star Society is owned by Moda Fabrics, Ruby Star lines never have honey buns (of course, not all Moda lines do either), so I made this mockup as though I was using a fat eighth bundle.

There are a couple other older mockups as well. I don't think I planned on actually making any of these. They were probably just intended for the eventual Fabric Refresh post. 

The first is Willow by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics. This is one of my favorite Sharon Holland collections. I actually made a quilt with this fabric over a year ago (not Sandalwood), but I haven't shared it because it's another pattern that hasn't been released yet (are you sensing a pattern yet? Ha!)

Finally, I made two versions of Sandalwood in Ruby Star Society's Hole Punch Dot. When this basics collection first came out, it was available in precuts, including fat quarters. So I made a darker version using 12 of the darker colors from the collection and then a lighter version using 12 of the lighter colors. Which is your favorite?

You should still be able to find the Hole Punch Dot fabrics (there are even more colors available now) but you might not be able to find a fat quarter bundle. You may need to pick your 12 colors and get quarter yards of each.
