Moda designer 1 Canoe 2 has a new fabric collection out now called Willow. If January is giving you the winter blahs, the Willow collection might be just what you need! The colors are so rich and saturated and these fabrics make me think of a summertime getaway.
I knew as soon as I saw this collection that I needed to refresh some of my patterns with Willow. I'm excited to share them with you today. Let's jump right in!
The first pattern that I refreshed with Willow was my Besotted pattern. This is a great pattern if you want a quilt that is quick and easy to make. Grab a layer cake and then the only decisions you need to make are what colors to use for the chains and the background.
I used white for the background and Bella solid in Dark Teal for the chains in the first refreshed mockup below. Then I swapped them in the second. Dark Teal is one of the Bella solids that the designer has chosen as a coordinating solid for the Willow collection.
Then for the third version below, I swapped the background with another coordinating solid called Breeze. I'm not sure what causes this to happen, but in the first two versions, there is a slight illusion of the blocks forming circles where they join together. However, changing to a lighter background with the white chains seems to make that illusion disappear. Maybe it's just me?
Next up is another layer cake friendly pattern. Stay Square is a great option if you want to avoid cutting up your fabrics into little pieces. It really lets the fabrics be the star of the show.
I'm sharing four versions of Stay Square below. they are the same except for the accent color. All are coordinating Bella solids: Mustard, Bubblegum, Betty's Teal, and Dark Teal.
I must have been on a layer cake kick when I was playing with Willow in my Electric Quilt 8 software. I refreshed my Midnight Clear pattern with Willow and couldn't decide on a background color. The first two mockups below use Dark Teal (can you tell I really like this one?) and Terrain Cactus (also a Bella solid).
Then I had to add a third with a white background because this pattern uses 41 layer cake squares and it's not often (at least in the collections I tend to be drawn to) that there are no low volume prints so you don't have to worry about some of your blocks not showing up well against the white background.
I refreshed one more layer cake pattern in Willow and that was Hidden Spools. Can you spot the spools shapes that are formed in the background? This is another pattern that uses 41 layer cake squares so I couldn't pass up the chance to see how it looks in a fabric collection without low volumes. With Willow, you will end up with a quilt where every block contrasts nicely and helps those hidden spools show up!
If a white background isn't your cup of tea, I refreshed this one in Dark Teal as well.
Next I mocked up Ophelia, one of my most popular patterns. This pattern is jelly roll friendly and looks fabulous in both a white and dark background. This pattern also includes instructions for using fat quarters if you prefer a more limited number of prints in your quilt.
Wayward is another jelly roll friendly pattern that works well with the Willow collection. I had fun trying out different background colors with this one and besides my go-to white, I have mockups in Terrain Cactus, Dark Teal, and Mustard.
I couldn't leave out some of my favorite fat quarter patterns. First up is Good Fortunes. The pattern is written for the first version below that uses scrappy cornerstones with the sashing. I also went with one of the prints for the sashing.
If you prefer a more simple look that maybe looks a little more modern, you can swap out scrappy cornerstones for white and use a solid for the sashing. I used Bella solid in Breeze here.
Tumble is another fat quarter friendly pattern that is great for letting your favorite prints in a collection shine. Adding in that dark accent lets the fabrics pop and gives the illusion of the blocks tumbling sideways (or at least it looks that way to me!)
I went with my standard white background/dark accent in the first version, but then I swapped them in the second. I can't quite decide how I feel about the white accent in that one. What do you think?
Finally, I am sharing a mockup of my Stargazing pattern. I used both a white background and a Dark Teal background. I think you definitely want to stick with either a very light or very dark background for this one. I tried the other coordinating solids and I didn't think it looked right. The contrast just wasn't there.
That's all for today! I hope you enjoyed these refreshed quilts in Willow by 1 Canoe 2 for Moda Fabrics. If you were looking for the perfect project to make with these fabrics, I hope I've given you some ideas.
Are there other patterns of mine that you'd like to see refreshed in Willow? Let me know in the comments below and I may be able to include them in a future Fabric Refresh blog post!
Until next time,
Amanda
Thank you so much for showing all the ways this line can be used! I bought a layer cake cause I fell in love but have been in such a rut with what to do with it!
