Albion by Amy Smart is a fabric collection that caught my eye a few months ago. This fabric from Riley Blake Designs is now showing up in quilt shops so this is the perfect time to share some of my quilt patterns that I refreshed with Albion fabrics.
The first pattern that I refreshed is Log Jam and this might be my favorite Albion mockup! I love this extra scrappy version with a variety of low volumes for the background instead of a single fabric.
You can use precut strips, but there are several low volumes in this collection and there probably wouldn't be enough strips that contrasted well if you used a light background. Instead, I made these mockups as if I used the fat quarter instructions in the Log Jam pattern. The pattern has instructions for using 12 fat quarters in place of yardage for the background. I pretended that I had half yards of 6 of the lightest low volumes from Albion.
The quilt above is the cover version of Log Jam. The pattern includes two other layout options and I included those here too!
My second favorite mockup in Albion is Shining Stars. I love how the colorful stars look with the blue background, which is one of the prints in the collection. Although, if you decide to make this version, keep in mind that the navy print has text on it and it won't all face the same way. If that bothers you, you'll want to use something else.
Stay Square is always a great way to show off a favorite fabric collection with it's large pieces and minimal background fabric. I went with the fat quarter option since a layer cake would have a bunch of low volumes that would blend into the background. However, I wanted to use more than just 12 prints so I used 18 fat quarters and made two blocks per print instead of the three in the pattern.
I couldn't decide on an accent fabric for the centers of the block groupings so I'm sharing three options below.
I thought the colorful spring-like fabrics in Albion would go well with my Flutter pattern. I used the navy text print for the accent/bodies and I went a little more bold than usual for the background. I used one of the floral low volumes that is a little on the busier side than some of the other low volumes in the collection. I think it works!
This pattern uses a layer cake, but I would recommend fat quarters for this one. The pattern doesn't include fat quarter instructions (someday I'll get around to updating all my patterns to add that to the ones that don't already!), but you can use 11 fat quarters and cut enough pieces for three blocks from each fat quarter.
I again used the navy text print as the accent in my Evening Glow pattern, plus the same floral low volume fabric for the background. You can use a layer cake and two charm packs to make this, but I would go with the fat quarter option to make sure the blocks contrast well with both the accent and background.
I must really like that navy fabric because I used it again for a refreshed Besotted quilt! This pattern is written for a layer cake, but you can also use fat quarters which would be my recommendation so that all of your blocks contrast with the chains and background. The pattern doesn't have fat quarter instructions, but similar to Flutter above, you can use 12 fat quarters and can cut enough pieces from one fat quarter to make three blocks.
Next up is my Ophelia pattern. This quilt can be made with a jelly roll, but I made this mockup as though I were using fat quarters. There are quite a few low volume prints in Albion so if you're using a light background, you'll have to include strips that won't contrast much with the background.
Finally, I refreshed my Easy Argyle pattern in Albion. This is a pattern made from yardage so I picked a low volume for the diamonds and then two prints for the main colors. I played around with a few options and liked this one the best. It could be a soft Christmas quilt that is not explicitly Christmas so it also works year-round! I think these prints give it a bit of a modern country feel!
That's all for today! Are there other patterns of mine that you'd like to see refreshed in Albion fabrics? Let me know in the comments and I may be able to include it in a future Fabric Refresh post!
Until next time,
Amanda
