Garden Charm Quilt From Stars & Stripes Scraps

Can you believe it’s almost July?  I certainly can’t, but it’s happening anyway whether I like it or not!  Around this time, I see a lot of people making flag quilts.  One of the most popular flag patterns of the last several years has been Stars & Stripes by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms.  I’ve made this quilt twice myself and have a third in the works.

About a year ago, I shared a blog post detailing how I planned to use the leftover fat quarter pieces from one of my flag quilts to make a second quilt using my Garden Charm pattern.  I realized recently that I never blogged about that quilt once I actually made it.  With Independence Day just days away, I figured this would be a good time to do that and to revisit that original blog post.

This quilt came about after I made my second Stars & Stripes quilt.  Each fat quarter has quite a bit leftover and I wanted to make use of them.  I cut a bunch of squares and realized that I could make a Garden Charm quilt.  I still had to add accent and background fabric, but the leftovers gave me my charms squares.

In the original blog post, I had settled on a white accent and had shared several different background color options.  At the time, I wasn’t sure which color I would ultimately choose.  In the end, I went with one of the blues.  I decided to use Moda’s Bella Solid in Mist (9900-37).  For the white accent, I used a white-on-white dot from Riley Blake that I had in my stash.

There are some slight differences in this quilt compared to the Garden Charm pattern.  The pattern does not include these modifications, but I explain all of it in the original blog post, linked below.  You can also find the Stars & Stripes pattern and the Garden Charm pattern linked below:

I’m really happy with how this quilt turned out.  I like it better than the original GardenCharm quilt!  The red and blue print fabrics were from Minick and Simpson’s Mackinac Island collection which is probably hard to find now.  If you the look and feel of those fabrics, you may want to check out their upcoming Isabellacollection.  It is scheduled to arrive in quilt shops in September.  You can preorder or sign up for notifications at Fat Quarter Shop if you want to make sure you don’t miss it!

Until next time!

Amanda
